Breakthrough Energy Ventures is the venture arm of Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy platform, founded in 2015 and investing across manufacturing, electricity, agriculture, transportation and buildings; its flagship funds have raised over $2 billion since a $1 billion first close in 2016, with a third fund topping $839 million raised as of August 2024. Its clearest GCC tie runs through portfolio company 44.01, an Oman-founded CO2-mineralization startup, which closed a $37 million Series A on 15 July 2024 led by Equinor Ventures and UAE-based Shorooq Partners, with Breakthrough Energy Ventures participating as an existing investor.
